Would you Paint over 1950’s style Oak woodwork to Modernize a home for resale value?
I just purchased a home that my Fiance and I plan to Flip. It has great potential to really make us some money. The home features some 1940 to 1950 era solid Oak woodwork. I like the wood work but think leaving it “Natural” looks too heavy and closes the room in. I would like to paint it white to open the space up and showcase the woodwoork in a different “modern” crisp, clean way. The home’s character would still shine through. I feel more buyers would be looking for that.
What do you think we should do with it?
Thanks for all the Answers. I ran out to Home Depot to see some “Naked” Oak and bought some samples of stains. I think I will strip the woodwork as bare as I can and restain it a lighter colour!
I would strip the old paint and finish with a citrus based stripper. Then I would go over it with steel wool, or a synthetic scrubber. Finally, I would just put some linseed oil on it. This will give the potential homeowner an idea of what it will look like with a finish, and save you some labor by not putting a finish on it. Then if they want to paint it or finish it, it is their choice.
