Matching a brass bed with a shabby shic look?
How can i match a full brass bed (all brass color) to my shabby chic bedroom? I have parquet flooring and white walls, do i have to paint it to another color, to avoid it looking overcrowded, or is it okay in it’s original color, thus creating a centerpiece for the room?
Good question, its a shame to paint a brass bed but IMO white would fit better into the shabby chic scheme, it depends a lot on what shape the brass is in too, antiquated brass goes, but bright shiny brass, not so much.
You can “antique it” with white vinegar or ferric nitrate . To prepare the antiquing solution, dissolve 1/2 teaspoon ferric nitrate in one pint of distilled water. Ferric nitrate is a strong oxidant that decomposes with evolution of nitrous fumes, you have to handle it as a hazardous material so IMO go with the vinegar.
Or just apply plain white vinegar. You can reapply the vinegar and allow it to dry repeatedly until you achieve the color you’re looking for.
I dont know how old you are or whether this is your furniture or not, if it belongs to say your parents, better get permission first, and if the bed is a genuine and valuable antique, hit the second hand stores and find one you can work on without repurcussions, because this is permanent.
But ultimately it is your room, do what you like with it, its okay to mix styles. Its done all the time. One brass bed will not wreck the overall decor of the room. Just cover it with dozens of pillows and cushions and you wont even notice it that much
